SCHOOL KILLINGS/WOUNDINGS

This paper is a summary list of school-related killings and wounding throughout America during the past 10 years as revealed in news clippings, web searches and in studies such as the National School Safety Centerís Report on School Associated Deaths at link http://www.nssc1.org/savd/savd.pdf  and the National School Safety and Security Services report titled School Deaths, School Shootings, and High-Profile Incidents of School Violence at link http://www.schoolsecurity.org/trends/school_violence.html

Those links provide specific details of the incidents that are summarized here only by location, date, number killed or wounded and type of victims.  The reader of this paper should be warned of the horrific graphic nature of many of the detailed descriptions of the vicious violent attacks on helpless children and teachers.  This writer often became physically sick to his stomach in reading the details of the many helpless little innocent children often literally being butchered by groups of bigger, aggressive and often drug/alcohol crazed assailants.  And your loved one could be next!         While this list only includes incidents resulting in actual death and wounding, there were actually many times more non-lethal violent attacks resulting in emotionally traumatized students many of whom end up as depression and suicide statistics.  Also, as reported at the NSSSS link, many planned or attempted school assaults were detected and avoided as a result of whistle-blowing students and faculty who have become more alert to signs of potential student violence from widespread publicity about major school massacres in the past such as Columbine, Red Lake, etc.
Because extensive scientific literature now exists documenting the connection between youth drug and alcohol use and violent behavior, unless a drug test of the assailants exists to verify that they were not on drugs at the time of the attack, it is quite reasonable to assume that virtually all of these incidents are drug- or alcohol- related crimes.
As anyone can see from the huge number, randomness of the dates, and widely varied locations of these terrible crimes against schoolchildren and teachers, NO ONE CAN BE ASSURED OF THE SAFETY OF THEIR CHILDREN AND TEACHERS IN SCHOOLS THESE DAYS.  And with school surveys documenting the terrible impact on children as illustrated by the high rates of admitted fear and depression among kids- also evidenced by the great number of child suicides cited in this list- it is time that parents and school authorities stop the denial of the nationís school drugs and violence crisis AND TAKE WHATEVER ACTION IS NEEDED TO GET DRUGS OUT OF SCHOOLS AND OUT OF OUR CHILDRENíS LIVES.
And the only way possible to do this is for the federal government to mandate that all schools utilize the best means ever proven to prevent schoolchild drug and alcohol use: MANDATORY HEALTH SCREENING OF ALL SCHOOLCHILDREN FOR DRUGS BY USE OF EFFECTIVE AND AFFORDABLE NON-PUNITIVE RANDOM STUDENT DRUG TESTING (RSDT.)  Nothing else has worked as well- EVER!
